I really think that's pretty much the nail in the coffin for the Wii U outselling the GameCube ... if MK8 can't gain them ground on the GCN, then it's really a lost cause.

Wii U: June 2014 (144k) + July (83k) = 227k

GameCube: June 2003 (124k) + July 2003 (126k) = 250k

And the GameCube had no real notable releases in this period. It means Nintendo basically gained no ground on the GameCube in the US despite releasing MK8.

I guess August 2014 for Wii U will be back into the ugly 60-70k (maybe 75k?) range.

That's actually pretty close. Im confident it can still pass it, though I'm not interested in debating it now.

That's not good, it should be considerably above the GCN for this time period considering the GCN had no big games released for the comparable stretch. The fact that they can't even gain ground with MK8 vs. nothing for the GCN is fairly disheartening I would say. They're not catching the GameCube, there's no way.

This is like a race between two people where one guy is sprinting as hard as he can and the other guy is just casually jogging, and the sprinting guy still manages to lose. That's not good.
