I really think that's pretty much the nail in the coffin for the Wii U outselling the GameCube ... if MK8 can't gain them ground on the GCN, then it's really a lost cause.

Wii U: June 2014 (144k) + July (83k) = 227k

GameCube: June 2003 (124k) + July 2003 (126k) = 250k

And the GameCube had no real notable releases in this period. It means Nintendo basically gained no ground on the GameCube in the US despite releasing MK8.

I guess August 2014 for Wii U will be back into the ugly 60-70k (maybe 75k?) range.
