Why are people saying the 3DS is selling badly?

It's not that 3DS is being bashed, it's just that it's massively down on last generation. That is not an opinion or a biased statement. It's a fact you can check out for yourself.

What makes the 3DS a direct successor to the DS but the PS3/PS4 not a direct successor to the PS2/PS3 respectively?

OT: Even when not compared to the DS, the 3DS is still doing badly. It should have an easy time of overcoming the GBA, but that even looks sparse.
