For what it is I'd say it was a huge sales success, how many JRPGs still break a million nowadays? The Tales series hasn't done it in forever and still seems to be quite healthy.
Ni No Kuni on PS3 could have been a bit more successful in Japan, but I heard that that didn't perform so well because all the marketing was spend on the DS version, which has sold over 500k over there. I think a sequel could be very lucrative and I'd love it if Sony chipped in to make this dream of mine a reality.
