The Xbox One had a rocky start in 2013, that gave it a lot of negative PR.

Microsoft had announced ambigious new policies that prompt gamers to inquire further and when its policies were understood to be anti-consumer it faced heavy backlash, that prompted the Xbox One to redesign its focuses.

Microsoft's quick action was able to mitage its negative PR.

The pros:

More exclusives at launch then its competitor

Inclusion of Kinect 2.0, established a large base for it.

The multimedia features of the console gave it more entertainment options then its competitors

MS quick policy changes averted much better sales then what was previously predicated.

Prevalent supply allowed the console to continue selling while its nearest competitor was sold out.

The cons:

most expensive console, less powerful then its cheaper, neareast competitor.

required inclusion of kinect hampered sales

negative PR made the console less desirable.

Its entertainment/multimedia focus didn't wasn't recieved as well as Microsoft wanted, causing it to lag behind its nearest competitor.

The XB1 is expected to achieve 2nd place globally in a matter of months, and is currently second in the US. Despite the negative PR, the XB1 actually sold well during lauch far surpassing its predecessor. However, the XB1 fell near the end of the year faster then its nearest competitor and has changed dramatically to resurge to little avail. As XB1 has lost many of the advantages its predecessor had, its going to have to emphasize its own specialties betters as well as stregthen its appeal to more reliant audiences.
