A lot of people seem shocked when I tell them that Saki is really good. It's understandable, of course, as I remember writing a scathing review of the first episode when it originally aired, but it turns golden once the tournament starts and Saki becomes bad-ass. The beauty of the series, however, is that it has so many good characters so it can be agonizing trying to pick who you want to win.
Personally, I LOVE anime where the main character has this absolute determination to succeed, to push their talents to the limit. Chihayafuru and Skip Beat, especially. Both of them gave me chills at times, as did Glass Mask.
