I'm speaking in general here. The 7th gen is where games in mass start shipping half full (with the exception of Nintendo of course). I could honestly stretch it to the 6th generation if I wanted to. There were enough online games to warrant that imo. But it definitely jumped the shark in the 7th gen.
I would like to amass a collection from the Atari 2600-SNES era myself. I think THAT is the true cut off line. We went from 2D to 3D and from nerdy pasttime to cool kid mainstream sort of thing.
