I really don't understand that thread that said the gap was closing if PS4 was always in 1 place.

Because wishful thinking trumps math. Just because I outscored you 10-3 in the first quarter but only 14-10 in the second quarter doesn't mean the gap became less than the original 7 just because I only outscored you by 4 in the second quarter. The gap is now 11.

We are using math...the gap isn't always widening. If the Xbox one and Wii U combined outsell the PS4, the gap between the Xbox One and Wii U combined vs. the PS4 is not widening. It is in fact shrinking. If you outscore me 10-3 in the first quarter but I outscore you 11-9 in the second quarter, the overall gap between us shrunk. Common sense.
