Wut? I think you're confusing Zelda II with another game... Never heard of this, all I know is that you lose your current exp if you get a game over.

Nope. Fight any enemey in Zelda and don't hit the xp number with your body or sword. You don't get it. And won't level up.

I'm going to chime in as kekrot did...this simply isn't true.  Their death gets you the XP...but you have to save after.
