The reason there is no backwards compatibility is the same reason there was no backwards compatibility for N64, SNES, and GCN for Nintendo. And to a lesser extent Xbox One, Xbox 360. It's too expensive.

Software emulation is not expensive though, in fact its free.

The only cheap software emulation is streaming, offline software emulation is more expensive then hardware emulation.
