Usually all of their consoles are refered to as the "Nintendo". The Gameboy was given a different name to distanciate itself form its home console counterpart. The Gamecube and the Wii were trying to give Nintendo a new image. The DS brand tried to be different than the GB.
Also, that's not exclusive to Nintendo. The PSP and the Vita have different names, all the Sega consoles had different names.
