The Gamecube also doesn't fit your theory. The Wii/DS comes from Iwata replacing Yamauchi, and comes from another revolution (to expand to a non-gamer audience), but the Cube had already broken the NES, SNES, N64 trend.

It is stupidity or a failure from a branding standpoint, if they wanted the Nintendo part (which they intentionally left in the name) to stick then they should have never given the thing that name, give it a name that emphasizes the "Nintendo".

Also the Gamecube is exactly what the NES, SNES and N64 were before it, a powerful and very affordable system without any bells and whistles, so I don't see how that broke with any hardware tradition for Nintendo.
