Eh I dunno. You can clearly see where our "talent" dried up (right as we failed to qualify for Euro 08) and the injection of younger, up and coming players is starting to happen post Euro 2012.
Euro 2012 we qualified as group winners. We then topped Group D which included France, Sweden and co-hosts Ukraine. We lost to Italy on penalties, the same team that went on to become runners up. This tournament we had a team that included Andy Carroll, Joleon Lescott, Scott Parker, Ashley Young.
WC 2010 was poor all around. Our goalkeepers were Rob Green and David James. We had a team that included Ledley King, Mathew Upson, an ancient Emile Heskey and Aaron Lennon. Also, we were disallowed a goal against Germany that would have made the game 2-2 and pushed all momentum in our favour. This goal that never was, was the key moment that led to FIFA actually implementing goal line tech. Germany went on to finish 3rd.
Euro 2008 we didnt qualify because Steve McClaren was a fucking idiot. Nothing to do with the players.
WC 2006 was nothing special, lost to Portugal on penalties in the Quarters. Portugal finished 4th.
Euro 2004 again was nothing special, also lost to Portugal on penalties in the Quarters. Portugal were runners up.
WC 2002 we had a great team and played really well, we lost to one of the greatest Brazil teams ever due to a freak Ronaldinho goal. Brazil went on to win the competition.

Could look a lot worse, but losing in quarter finals to teams that reach the semi finals is nothing to be majorly upset about, especially when you look at the games in more detail.
