I do play 3DS in public. When I'm I'm on the bus, the train, sitting bored with nothing to do, etc.
Nope, I don't give a flying frick what others think about me, even though most people are actually amazed by the fact that it has 2 screens and real 3D (I love it when someone is all like "you know it's not real 3D dude? And then I show them the screen :P)
