Its because Nintendo is a Game Developer as well. 3rd party existed before Sony, but since Nintendo dominate the market, it controlled the 3rd parties, and it would organize them in away to benefit it. When Sony came in, it provided an alternative that Sega didn't have since unlike Nintendo or Sega it wasn't a game developer.
