I would say "neglected" was the word you were looking for, not "butchered" as Nintendo is probably the best in the business for maintaining the quality of franchises 20-30 years old. 

Nintendo makes very, very few bad games period, even Metroid: Other M wasn't a bad game per se, just a bad Metroid game.
