Last time an old school platformer tried an open world approach, it didn't end up well. Just look Sonic 06.

Why is this type of argument so common on gaming boards? Do people not realize how fallacious and stupid an argument it is?

I just don't see the game as an open world platformer. True, the Mario series needs a breath of fresh air; something that can innovate the series so it doesn't feel stagnant. But I don't think abandoning it's 2D side-scrolling formula is the answer. It did work for Super Mario 64, but I have my doubts that they can repeat something that good again.
