In other words Aonuma suggest that in Zelda U you could go to any direction but at some point you cannot progress without the requested abilities and experience. Therefore, you need to explore other parts of the world in order to gain experience and new abilities to explore even further.

Good news. I'm all for open world exploration, but it shouldn't be 100% open from the beginning. Unlocking and getting to certain parts of the world after acquiring items is exciting.

Reminds me of Majora's Mask. Each time you got to a new area a large chunk of the world was open up to you, but you had to explore it to move on.

Then near the end of the game you could go to Great Bay or Ikana Kingdom in any order.

It will still be more open than that of course.
