Will the Amiibo brand make Nintendo a lot of money? Yes.
Will it actually sell the Wii U? Maybe. Not until 2015 though once more games use it and Wii U gets a price cut. Even then, it's only a maybe.
However, I see Amiibo as a double edged sword. It will generate the short-term profit that Nintendo needs but also strengthen the "Nintendo is for kids" idea. Gives people one more reason to ignore Nintendo.
