That's an interesting observation.

While the clay aesthetic is merely mildly appealing to my eyes, I can see how its novelty can be gorgeous to others, and I commend HAL for trying something different. This is one of the things I love about Nintendo, they have games that look like clay, yarn, paper... the creativity is awesome. Much more interesting than every game trying to look realistic.
