Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad thing.  They should be thankful they have such a dedicated fanbase which turns out to buy all the games.

It's just, Atlus seem to have been looking at expanding a lot of their stuff lately.  All the Persona animation/spinoff games.  They've tried to expand Etrian Odyssey, too.  It was a yearly franchise until IV which took 2 years, and then they tried to expand the audience by making it more story-focused with Untold.  But it was still being bought by the same core audience, it seems, since sales stayed exactly the same.

The development hop for IV would probably be the DS to 3DS generation change, and the need to redevelop base code with the new dev kits.

IV and Untold were, effectively, the same game which probably explains the lower sales of Untold (as well as its rather weak story... for being a story focused rendition). If they honestly are looking to expand (which I think is a generally valid thought for this franchise at least) then they need to really re-work some aspects of it rather than printing the same game with a larger numeral on the end or by slapping on a vestigal story. Otherwise it will mostly remain stagnant in appeal and sales.

In my opinion the games would be considerably improved without the tedious movement mechanics above all else. Its just not fluid the way its designed far and above the random encounter breakage which is still in the dated Nocturne-circle style. If they make the motion more fluid, I think the series would gain more appeal than trying to tack on stories without changing the core. I'm a  fan of the series and even I have started to find the mechanics tedious at this point.
