Well, DK would have sold better if Wii U owners were starved that much. The few (mostly crappy) third-party games that were released this year have really low attach rates on Wii U.
The free game promotion obviously helped MK8 sales.
Wii U owners probably yearned for MK8 like PS4 and X1 owners yearned for Watch_Dogs, no matter what was released the months before.
