I think they've kinda drawn the line in the sand now that they will want profits, and aren't willing to take a loss on the Wii U hardware.
When they're able to drop the price due to manufacturing price reductions then they will do so, but not any time sooner.
The 3DS is actually closer to the end of its lifecycle than people think IMO, Nintendo needs to salvage something from this disasterous generation and be able to post a few profitable years here if at all possible and the Wii U cannot interfere with that, if it only sells 3-4 million/year, then Nintendo will live with that, but they can't have losses from the Wii U eating into the 3DS "harvest" which is smaller than they would've liked to begin with.
