I honestly believe that the usual animated style has more mainstream appeal to the 15-20 million people who buy pokemon games than the picture posted in the OP. It is tested in all varieties of media, the handheld games (which sell more than the console releases) as well as the anime and trading card game. 

What console releases?

Colloseum, and XD are pokemon RPGs on the Gamecube. The other games are battle, "stadium", games. 

well, the gamecube didn't have a fraction of the hardware sales of ANY Nintendo handheld. And aldo those games could have been put more effort into IMO (from what i've seen).
