I think the best answer to that is that Zelda is a very important franchise to bring in certain gamers that would normally hesitate to buy a Nintendo console for the other games. I know a few more girls than boys who love Zelda (my sisters for example), it seems like Zelda is a big franchise for girls. It's also a franchise that has depth and people who see Nintendo consoles as lacking substance might think twice when a game like Zelda is released. Also, Twilight Princess did sell 10m units combined if memory serves me right. I'm not sure what the profits are exactly but I doubt the costs exceeded 100m$. Don't quote me on this though :P Spemanig might be a better person to ask. |
Getting these few special gamers is the only logical conclusion. One of the reasons i brought it up was that they could cut some of Aonuma's puzzle making staff and allocate that money towards my belowed 2D Mario. 
Am just waiting for Pavolink's threads when Zelda U eventually doesn't even push sales closer to Skyward Sword.
