WHy why why is there only like... 4 or 5 people here who even REALLY read what was ACTUALLY being said? Jigokutamago's quote explains exactly what was meant, but people keep trying to ignore that point. You didn't even really NEED his quote to realize it either. It's all in the OP as well.

FIRST POINT: that’s in direct contrast with what it is we’re trying to achieve with Wii U," (Specifically states Wii U. Not Nintendo as a whole. There's a reason for that)

SECOND POINT: Nintendo is interested in virtual reality technology, he says, and "always looking at hardware and assessing what’s possible." (RIGHT HERE it says Nintendo IS Interested in VR, but you can see that from the quote they are saying that with current hardware, it wont work)

THIRD POINT: But the current opinion within the company is that the technology is better suited for arcades than the living room, he says. (NOTE the word "BETTER SUITED." There's a reason behind that. Actually THINK about why they said that).

So really, everything you needed to know was already in the OP on how to interpret this information that Nintendo isn't saying VR is stupid and we never have done it before. It's CLEAR that they're saying "we're interested, but it's not for the Wii U and the technology currently isn't up to the point where it would offer an experience you can share with others."

It's not "out of touch" at all to say that. It's simply stating the fact that current technology isn't good enough for VR to be worth it.
