Just a hint. Portables are tricky as most will require a Y cable (because they are USB 3.0 now). I got an imation 500gb one. Sometimes the Wii U doesnt detect it and sometimes it does. Just need to turn console on and off and it usually does. I have had my Wii U freeze on me before because of the external hdd.

Nintendo could have solved a lot of hdd issues with USB 3.0.

You are saying that all 2.5" external HDD requiere a Y cable if they are USB 3.0, but old USB 2.0 ones would work perfectly fine with just one cable?

my guess is it would since usb 2.0 draws less power, however hdd size would be limited to whatever usb 2.0 portable was.  Saying all this I wouldn't gurnatee  it as Nintendo always cuts costs so the port may not be enough to power it up.
