No, the Wonderful 101 was as niche as a game can be, due to confusion about what precisely it wanted to be.
Bayonetta's appeal is clear: sex and violence, delivered in a way that's over-the-top enough to not be off-putting to the self-conscious social-justice crowd, but also not so esoteric as to turn off those who just want to watch a sexy lady kill things. It makes no bones about being an action game in the style of Devil May Cry or God of War, and it does a very good job of it too.
The question is, does that clear appeal reach the "mainstream" Nintendo gamer? Probably not, but it'll reach enough of the core Nintendo gamer that the game won't do horribly.
