From what we've seen recently, he never lost his touch for making games, games like Mario Galaxy were amazing, but like he himself said, he's been cutting back on the game development scene, I don't think he worked that much on Mario 3D World. At this point, he's probably only overseeing projects rather than being completely involved in the design and such. These games look meh because they were revealed really early, and in sure his whimsical mind could come up with some genuinely fun games with those concepts.
