DX9 to DX10/11 is a bigger step than DX10 to DX11 though. What about GPU gens, how many between 9800GT and a 5550 HD?

One

Nvidia 700 = AMD 200X

Nvidia 600 = AMD 7000 - PS4/X1 [upper mainstream/lower mainstream at the time]

Nvidia 500 = AMD 6000

Nvidia 300/400 = AMD 5000 - Wii U [entry level at the time]

Nvidia 9000/200 == AMD 4000

Nvidia 8000 = AMD 3000

Nvidia 7000 = AMD 2000 - X360/PS3  [high end at the time].

That said generations arent as important as the GPUs market segment. A high end card from 2-3 generations ago can probably beat or match an entry level card from the current generation. According to Toms Hardware GPU heirarchy chart an AMD 5550HD (entry level by todays standard, not far from Intel integrated GPUs) is barely more powerful than an AMD X1950(360, top end at the time) despite it being 4 generations ahead in theory. From that context saying the WiiUs GPU is several generations ahead doesnt amount to much in the real world.

It's not just the generations gap though, it's also DX10/11 vs DX9.
