Which brits are these? we probably have over 100 distinct accents in our country. The town my parents live in, Tamworth, even has it's own distinct accent when it's a town of only 90,000 people. What yanks speak isn't English with really odd words like soccer (only you guys call it soccer), trash, pants... none of these words feature in English.

Bullshit, "soccer," like "rugger," is an English word, not an American one.  It is derived from association football (the "soc" in association), more commonly known as football.  Basically, soccer and football are both English words.  I prefer football myself, but those are the facts.
