It takes a balance. Nintendo hasn't been able to release it's games quickly enough to sustain strong Wii U sales. 3rd party could have covered some ground between Nintendo releases. Poor interest in Wii U overall is limiting Nintendo's game sales more than anything.
Anyway, 1st party games cost money to develop and don't always recoup development costs. 3rd party games make money too, with someone else paying the development cost and taking all the risk.
