GFW was a failure because it was a half ass effort. MS indeed benefits from having games on Windows, it encourages millions and millions of people to stick with Windows. You're downplaying how large the PC gaming community is. And your overestimating how much, Windows benefits from it, Driver Compatibility alone, dwarfs the impact of the games ported from xbox platforms alone. Steam is cross platform, but the support for other platforms is abysmal compared to Windows. That discourages gamers from moving away from Windows. Abymsal compared to non-existant is still a huge increase. The majority of games played on linux are done through WINE (a windows emulator for exe programs). Compatibility alone discorages gamers from moving away from Windows, until Steam OS, no notable OS has been made for the main purpose of gaming, its just that Windows was the most popular, so it got the most developers, so it has the most games, and a lot of its games aren't compatible with mac/linux. That is discourgement enough. Windows has little impact if any on Xbox, which is why MS allows ports on Windows. Don't misunderstand me, I said Windows does not help Xbox, does not benifit Xbox, that does not mean it has no impact. MS does not benefit much at all by having games on Window, but it means that Xboxs are less necessary. Exclusivity to Windows discourages gamers from moving away from Windows. Exclusivity to Windows literally means nothing. MS does not need to pay a dev to be exclusive to Window, compatibility and marketshare alone will make a dev prioritzie the os at the expense of others. Here's the situation. You're looking for a negative spin and I'll continue to respond by pointing out Windows ports has little impact on consoles. We can keep going in circles if you want. We aren't going in circles, we are going in a straight line, and you are going backwards. There is no negative spin, but this cannot be construed as a positive for Xbox and a minor one for Windows, its a much greater postive for PC gamers and Steam. I'm unconcerned with whether or not you downplay the effect of PC because you do recognize there is an impact, and my claim is that the XB1 is not in the position for MS to be making Windows impact the XB1 Console, little or not. |

Microsoft will bring games for pc but not every single one of them. The ones that do will come at a later stage. Sometimes it takes more than a year or even 2 but other times it might be shorter. I dont see a problem with that as long as they dont bring every single exclusive to pc. 1st party games probably wont. |
The problem is that even if Microsoft is the publisher, Steam is the vendor. Steam makes the bulk of the profit on this the sales. Even Less considering, Steam's traditonally low sales prices. While one might argue that these sales will be small cause these games are past their prime, the issue is that MS gains practically zero benefit. But it does harm the Xbox 1 even if miniscule, if this happens to more exclusives then it will become a serious problem.
MS is smart enough to realize this as well, so I doubt they are the ones encouraging it. It is more likely that they didn't pay for full exclusivity.
I am an alarmist, even if im an optimist as well.
I'm not worried about 1st party. I just doubt that MS would purposely gimp there 3rd party exclusives for little benifet whatsoever.
