Platform by Platform Analysis:
- The Wii U continues to lead, mostly because of X and Super Smash Bros 4, which are responsible for over half the point total. It's worth noting that the WIi U has other games ranking highly though. For instance, Zelda U, Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, Sonic Boom, and, to my surprise, Watch Dogs. Ubisoft would almost not even be listed as a notable publisher this month without the Wii U version of Watch Dogs picking it up.
- Over 7 years later, the PS3 is not going down without a fight. Most of its points came from JRPG's like Tales and Persona 5. The PS4, however, had nearly triple as many points, and is a solid second behind the Wii U. A whopping 34 PS4 games charted, of which only a few are exclusive. It seems the PS4 is the multiplatform console of this gen. That said, Uncharted, like Zelda U, did surprisingly well for a game with little known info.
- The 360 might be dead again, but the One goes on! Halo and Quantum Break fell a bit this month, but Sunset Overdrive rose to third place in the skus, while the other games remained significant. Besides these four shooters though, the Xbone is a bit lacking, even in terms of multiplats. It appears that Xbox fans are becoming more exclusive focused, like PS3 fans were for a while in 2012 and Nintendo fans have been since, I dunno, 1996.
- The PC remains a multiplat-dominated platform, with only Civilization standing out as an exclusive. However, with over 100 points, it's doing decently enough, in part due to the presence of 19 other games.
- The 3DS only had 10 titles chart. However, three of these were Pokemon, Smash, and Tomodachi Life. These alone pushed the platform higher than the PC. Despite this 1st party support, however, the long-term future of the platform is hard to judge, especially since Tomodachi Life is releasing in a few days and Smash by summer's end.
- The VIta is relying heavily on a number of minor 3rd party Japanese games. Even Sony's offerings, like Freedom Wars, are not gathering much buzz. However, the platform's longterm future appears to be stable at least, so long as new Japanese games eventually get localized.
- The Arcade platform had an infinite increase month over month, scoring a whopping 5 points. At this rate, every other platform should be dead by year's end.
Other
- The struggle between the JRPG and the Shooter to be VGChart'z top genre continues, with X saving the day for the JRPG once again.
- Without Mario Kart 8, the racing genre plumetted. Hard. Incidentally, the top upcoming Racing game is also a Wii U sku.
- Atlus is doing great for a publisher with three skus.
- E3 is next month. Mark your calendars!
