No, they are not - they are PCs with SteamOS on which you can't (and you won't be able to, since they'll flop miserably) play most of 3rd party games. So, if you want to play most 3rd party games you only have 3 choices and none of them is Steam machines.

Steam OS is the only reason I'm even considering the steam box. I've seen it in use, and it's exactly like a console. It may literally be a PC, but it feels like a console, and there's no tinkering.
And this is not an issue of me needing anything. It's not a question of "where should a play 3rd party games." It's "should I get a steambox." If the answer is no, I'll be fine with not playing those games, as I only play video games casually and don't really care.

Hm, it seems you can't quite make up your mind:

I just want a console that plays 3rd party games with free online.

Anyway, sure, with Steam Box you will be able to play some 3rd party games and it has free online, so by all means, do buy it.

That's taken out of context. I never asked what would be a good machine to play 3rd party games on. It's not a question of "where should I play 3rd party games.

I seem to be the only one here with a similar mind set to you so I am confused as to why you have ignored my posts. I don't want a MS PC, I have a Wii U, Steam OS sounds good to me with already over 1,000 games available. This thread has only attractive people who will come out to turn you off of Steam OS and try to turn you toward their "choice", as nobody is on the steam OS bandwagon yet.
Write down what you need in a list and check to see if the steam machine offers what you need, but only use impartial sources for your research. Most of the comments here have been biased. And most have not actually listened to what you want.
