Think about it. Think about how big that game would have to be to actually be satisfying.

It would probably have to be on a bluray disc then ...

EDIT: I never said this was an MMO. It's very much a single player game with some online elements, similar to the way the handhelds handle it. I HATE MMO's.

An open world Pokemon game with real-time third person battles like in Zelda. Unique models for every single Pokemon and forme. (700+) Unique models for all humans. Unique animations for every single one of those Pokemon and humans. Attack animations for every translatable attack/move, some with unique variations amongst different Pokemon. (500+) The entire open world skyrim-esce region would have to be fully rendered. Ai would have to be rendered for every Pokemon on a case by case basis to match not only with their unique species, but their individual natures/personalities. Even if this was just basic Ai programming, it would be complicated. Accurate balancing for 700+ Pokemon. Populating the vast world with the appropriate pokemon ecosystem. Recording unique cries for each Pokemon with species variation and variations depending on the situation. (because bit cries wouldn't work in a game like this) Hopefully voice acting for all NPC's. Music and sound effects for the entire region. All of this running at a servicable resolution and framerate. Nintendo would exept nothing less than 720p 30fps locked. It would be huge. Maybe too huge.

Nonsense, the game would not be all that huge as the low resolution meshes could be covered with low resolution textures to reduce the amount of data and a contraint on draw distance would help too to not cause overflow issues. Putting out alot of content isn't all that hard ...

I don't think that a game this huge has ever been created before. Not even Skyrim is this huge. Now this game would have the benefit of not being as graphically demanding as Skyrim, but all this things considered, I'm just not sure the game of our dreams is even possible on PC yet. (this coming from someone with zero PC knowledge) Maybe the reason we haven't gotten the Pokemon game we all want yet is because it simply isn't possible yet.

Actually I don't even think the game that your describing is even on the level of skyrim. It probably doesn't even compare to ARMA 3 with a 270 square kilometer area ... It would be very possible on the WII U too! The PC would just take the game that your describing to a whole new level.

Thoughts? Please tell me I'm wrong and that the Pokemon game of my dreams is possible somewhere, especially if you understand this sort of thing more than I do.

You are wrong, there ...
