I was mostly spewing ideas. And I feel that DLC is a viable path provided you use Capcom as a guide of what NOT to do.
Hell, if Nintendo's recent DLC offerings are anything to go by, they already know how to do it properly. Mario Golf, for example, offered $15 of DLC, but this DLC basically added 50% more content to the asking price of $30.
If the Mario Kart team spent the next few months making another two cups for Mario Kart 7, added four more characters, and offered the new content either as $10 of DLC or as part of a new $35/$40 retail product, I'd hardly be upset.
This won't expand the market, but done wisely, it won't lead to a contraction either.
