He's representative of the organization. It applies to both Sony and MS, Kutaragi and Mattrick. When an employee says something that makes the company look bad they are responsible either because they believe it themseleves or they could not control the behavior of there representatives.

Nobody gets to blame it on Mattrick or Kutaragi, its not like they weren't involved in the development process, hell Kutaragi is basically the founder of PlayStation. Not to mention, that the PS3 basically followed the design philosophy of the PS2 to the letter.

Otherwise, these companies would be faceless and would not be held responsible for their actions.
