Everyone won.
Nintendo made a shitload of money, Xbox found its place in relevance and Sony put up a great fight on an uphil battle and finally catching up. And yes it did matter because now the console wars is even more fun :)
If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.
