If people are looking to use a flash card on 3DS, know that only a select few are updated to keep up with the changing firmware. No R4s are amongst that crowd since all R4s now are name stealing knockoffs of the original team which disbanded in 2008 I think. The knockoffs get updated a couple times and then a new model releases. And they aren't supremely reliable.
DO NOT try to use a Gateway card. There can be big issues with newer firmware you'd have on a new 3DS. Could brick the thing.
I'm glad it's taking longer to work a flashcard on 3DS, with the firmware updates and all. Hopefully this is kind of effective at reducing the incredibly rampant piracy that plagued DS and PSP. The fact that we won't have emulators on phones or ones able to run well on cheap laptops etc. for a while I'm sure helps.
