Why would MS care if cable TV providers are giving them money for a feature of convience?
Are you sure about point# 2. Looking at things today and not thinking about how MS will be expanding their options in the future I do not believe is looking at the big picture. Convience is one of the main reason why people think about devices like Apple TV, Roku and other such devices. When all is said and done, all the devices probably will have the same content but the one that does it best will gain the rewards.
