Everything else is a matter of strategy, in my oppinion every bit can either help or be deterimental. My main point is, Nintendo wants (I would hope so) to convince the Playstation and Xbox owners to buy their console and games. The E3 stage is a non irrelevant platform to entice this userbase and in some way the more general crowd. The Nintendo directs might seem very good from an insular prespective of a die hard Nintendo fan, but it's not bringing in new audiences.
