The Wii proved that high-end expensive loss-leading hardware wasn't a requirement for selling consoles or being successfull. |
The only thing the Wii proved was that attracting the casual provided great success, so far its shown that its not reproducable especially since those who bought Wii because it was a hot ticket item instead of Nintendo's games have all moved to mobile, which in the interim has already dwarfed the Wii's technical capabilities.
Nowadays, something like the WIi can't even happen, there is no way a "luxury" dedicated gaming machine is going to be on par with a more powerful, more feature full, more popular, smartphone thats seen as a neccessity, even if it was exorbitantly priced.
Physical Consoles can't exists on a PC model. There is already enough stress on them as it is. Efficiency won't help one bit cause any benefits on the software side of development will affect mobile and PC development as well not to mention the fact that active development on PC and Mobile platforms in general dwarfs that of consoles. PCs become cheaper and Mobile becomes more powerful. Consoles are straddling that line, effiency or anything else that reduces cost down the board would shrink it further. It would kill consoles, but it wouldn't really benifit consumers either way, considering the prices they pay would be basically the same. However in terms of hardware, PC manufacturers would be able to take advantage of ignorance and sell people "gaming pcs".
