Actually I'm not to sure that they actually to well in given us numbers. In straight forward weeks they just use the data from professional tracking sites like media create and MCV to come with theire own data. They also take official figures from Sony and MS. When they do go drastically wrong is in weeks that some strange happens like a big launch of a game or a price cut. Because they can't rely on trends based on figures from tracking companies to come up with their own figure to guess the sales for that week. At this point VGC sometimes delays their figures to see what the tracking companies come up with before they put out theirs. Sometime those figures are to far away and they have to get some figures out and this is when they go wrong and expose themselves and that they're not actually using their own data to come up with their figures. Past figures get stealth edited and things go on like nothing happened.
Now this doesn't mean that VGC is a bad site, it isn't. I look at their figures regularly. What's wrong though is that it trys to be something it's not. It's not a professional tracking site in the sense that the actively get store sales data from all over the world. VGC isn't even sure of it's own numbers with and a great example of this was when NPD released their Feb 2014 numbers. VGC didn't stick to it's number, nor did they want to be seen copying NPD again, so they decided to meet NPD numbers in the middle.
