I seem to recall it being disussed that when it uses two pads the frame rate goes from 60 fps to 30 fps & that was a technical bottleneck. I guess Wii U VR games could have a special 600(stretched)x600 resolution and keep 60 FPS, a 3D headset would also cost more because it would need a higher definition screen that would arguably give a worse experience at 30fps.
Nintendo could say, "To hell with resolution!" and make a 60 FPS 3D headset that displayes at 400(stretched)x480 for each eye, esentially going back to SD. With the power of an HD console outputting in SD you can then do more effects, like fullscreen motion blur, 4xAA, high resolution shadows, etc. That might be the best recipe with what the Wii U gamepad (& the Wii U itself) can do.
