Seems like most people are in agreement, E3 is great for major announcements, stirring up hype, getting a crowd reaction, and getting more media attention, while Directs are good for smaller updates, focusing on specific games, and announcements for the rest of the year (e.g. Hyrule Warriors, NES Remix).
