That´s not completely true. You have to remember that 3rd party efforts on Wii so far have been only mediocre. Many games where of bad quality and bigger games like Monster Hunter and Fatal Frame won´t hit earlier than 2009. Sales of a game really depend on the quality of the title and so far the quality of 3rd party titles has been really bad on the Wii. The same happened to the NDS: The first two years have been dominated by Nintendo games but now the system really sells on the strength of 3rd party releases. The same will happen to the Wii once great 3rd party efforts appear on the system. The main issue is the audience - Wii owners are not necessarily younger than Playstation 3 owners but they like a different type of games - games like Guitar Hero, My Sims, Lego Star Wars and The Simpsons sell very well on the Wii, just like "mature" games like Resident Evil but all in all the audience is not that much hunting for "realistic" games and that´s what 3rd parties have to get used to before they can sell a good amount of games. But they will get used to it, there is no other possibility for Japan-centric games as of now: The Playstation 3 sales are not good enough to put a lot of effort into a PS3 game that will only sell in Japan and a port to the Xbox 360 wouldn´t make a lot of sense for such a game, too. Therefore developers will have to get used to the Wii. |
Excuse me? Are you calling well reviewed games like Zack & Wiki, Winning Eleven Wii & No More Heroes mediocre efforts? Now youre making up excuses to cover up the Wii's own problems. I love those games, and I have to admit as a nintendo fan Im very disappointed the way they are performing in Japan especially since they were known to have taste for creative design. Those games deserved to become top sellers in the japanese region alone.
Not all 3rd party support for the Wii has been mediocre. So you best not use that as you defining arguement for the situation of the Wii in Japan.
There is doubt in my mind that Monster Hunter III and Fatal Frame will be fantastic, but it remains questionable on how they will perform in Japan.
I think the "wii owners are younger/(very) young" arguement is incorrect. Indicators show that the Wii is more a family console which applies to both younger and elder crowds. Guitar Hero for example IS performing well... outside of Japan (its yet to be release in Japan). 3rd games are generally performing decent outside of Japan. But IN Japan? please, spare me bullshit. I see software like Wiifit, Wiiplay topping the charts and I cant see how you can pull out that card saying 3rd party PS3 soft fails. Indicators are showing that the Wii userbase is more willing to buy Nintendo published developed games than 3rd party games which is really saddening.
Wii only owners are telling themselves that PS3 software sales arent good enough to overshadow their own situation. I cant deny the hardware sales steep. But software-wise it does show that the sales & consumers are there. Hopefully it will change for the Wii.
