The key is looking at past Zelda titles. Part of the problem with the newer Zelda games is the items. In older Zelda games the items where useful not to traverse a puzzle in the dungeon but to make combat better. The boomerang in the first Zelda game was used to stop enemies on their tracks and it was really useful. On newer zelda games it's almost useless and is mostly used to complete a puzzle inside a dungeon.
Some items are used with the only purpose of doing a dungeon and serve no other purpose in the newer Zelda games. In my opinion, that has to go away.
Also combat should be a lot more difficult, I am not talking about Dark Souls level of challenge but a decent one like the original Zelda game. Each enemy should have different ways to be slain and there should be more enemies per room rather than adding more puzzles.
