That's more or less what I'm thinking; the whole Cell period seems like an enormous waste, there were other and more efficient multicore processors being developed and sold at the time, and they were all cheaper alternatives with kinder coding environments.

I'll never understand the Cell, I guess it could be Sony wanting to push a chipset archetype to gain a foothold as an overall provider (not unlike the formats over the years), they had the muscle to flex after the PS2's staggering success. The Cell remains a huge mistake though, possibly their biggest one in two decades or so.
