PSP did alright in Europe (50% as well as DS as opposed to 66% as well in Japan). I think Gran Turismo was one of the big games to help it.

I think Gran Turismo helped push just an many units (outside of Japan) as Monster Hunter pushed inside it.

Monster Hunter wasn't just one game, it was a series of megahit games, like COD in the West. PSP became the go-to console for a popular series, it was like if COD went Xbone exclusive.

and there wasn't 1 GTA for PSP either

Edit: I just realized my last post I said Gran Turismo when I meant Grand Theft Auto........ Damn accronyms, but GT did help a bit too.
